Whose Justice Is It?

Self-defense is protecting yourself, loved ones, or property from an immediate threat. Vigilantes, from the Spanish word for "guards", catch and punish suspected criminals without going through the legal system. Vigilante justice is often more about revenge than self-defense.

What do you know about vigilante justice, or taking the law into your own hands?

  1. What i know about self defense is that u can't just say self defense if you are doing something wrong.Like Emmet Till there was no justice for the family or the community. An example of justice is when a murderer gets jailed for committing a crime.Injustice is when a murderer is free to roam in the world after all the crimes he or she has committed. I think that everyone should have justice no matter what.

  2. I don't know to much about vigilante justice. But I think you should let the cops do there job. Its gonna benefit you because you can get in trouble for taking the law in your own hands. Even though in some sitchuations I know taking it into your own hands sounds like the best thing. But it most likely isn't.

    2. i agree because if murder is illegal why isnt everyone who has been murdered and the murderer was found how come no justice was served. therefore taking matters into your hands is the most logical way to get justice but it wouldnt be thr right thing to do

    3. I agree because it is unfair for one person to decide if the criminal should be punished or not and how. They could be clouded by anger or sadness to make those kinds of decisions.

  3. I agree because vigilantes do this outside of the legal system. They will do anything to protect the ones dear to them. But for revenge? I'm not too sure about that. Why do some, I don't mean most, execute criminals. Maybe there is more than revenge that drives these "vigilantes".

  4. What I know about taking the law into your own hands is that it could be very dangerous.I don't think people should do it. I think the law should take care of it instead of untrained people. Something could happen to them while doing it.

  5. I agree, Vigilante justice is like taking an eye for an eye, most of the time government doesnt always use their fair treatment. Like when the KKK murdered Emmit Till, no government took justice, and that case was left with no justice commited, so in a way to a level of extent vigilante is a way to be able to take justice into your own name

  7. I don't know much about vigilante justice, except for what they told me. I think i was in a situation where i see a crime being committed i would do something about it. But then theres a reason why i wouldn't do anything, you could be risking your life and you could get hurt. It can be very dangerous but if that is their job then they should do whatever they can to protect people.

  9. I really don't know that much about vigilante justice. I think that if its not to serious, its fine. leave it to the police if you can, though. But if someone is beating the crap out of you and no one is around to help then you can use self-defense. Only to get them off of you, though. I really don't like violence, so i personally would rather call the police or get away with out hurting anyone.

  10. I've never heard about vigilante justice until today in class but I believe that it is not a great system. They catch and punish "suspected" criminals without even going through the legal system. So, who even knows if the suspected criminals were even guilty or not. This could also be very unfair to the criminal. They could be getting killed for only stealing a loaf of bread for their family in need. Some may believe that vigilante is a form of self defense but it sounds to me like revenge.

  11. i agree, because things people are more cruel now than ever. i also disagree on it as well and a lot people have gotten away with murder because o self defense. so it doesn't always have to be because we have the right but don't abuse your right. i believe that it depends on the situation and what position you are in at the moment.

  12. I think that vigilante is not good. It's not fair for you to get in trouble for defending yourself. I understand if you like, hurt the person bad enough to be in the hospital, but a fight back? Leave the cops to it if you can't handle it.

  13. I don't know much about Vilgiliante Crime. I don't think you should get in trouble for defending yourself. If you don't defend yourself then what else can you do ? Nothing. People now a days do very cruel and unnecessary things to other people and fighting back is a crime. The police can only help to a certain extent and sometimes they make it worse. If its bad let the police handle it , if you can handle it yourself then do so.

  15. I agree because sometimes you don't agree with everything that goes on around you. You may want to stand up for what you believe in. You know you can't trust everyone, and of course you can't trust the government. Especially if there are lots of people who agree with you. Make sure everyone gets what they deserve.

  16. I don't know much about vigilante crime, but what i do know is that it involve's various degrees of violence. I believe that you should take matters in to your own hands when they're not doing their job or doing enough to help. Its not fair to get in trouble for defending yourself. I don't agree you should take matters in to your own hands period because if everyone did that wouldn't it result in something worse? Everyone would want something different.
